Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death for women in Jamaica—but many don’t realize their symptoms can look very different from men’s. This post is to empower women with the knowledge they need in order to protect their health.
Heart attack symptoms in women tend to be more subtle and easily misinterpreted than in the case of men. Chest pain or discomfort is the most common symptom of heart attack in men AND women but women are more likely to experience symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea or indigestion, pain in the back, neck or shoulder, dizziness or lightheadedness. These are real and serious signs—don’t ignore them.
Women face several unique risk factors when it comes to heart disease—many of which are often overlooked. Hormonal changes, such as those during pregnancy or menopause, can significantly affect cardiovascular health. Pregnancy-related conditions like preeclampsia and gestational diabetes not only pose immediate risks but also increase the likelihood of developing heart disease later in life. Autoimmune disorders like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, which are more common in women, also elevate cardiovascular risk.
Additionally, women tend to experience higher levels of stress and depression, both of which are closely linked to heart health. Perhaps most concerning is the persistent issue of underdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis in women, partly due to gender bias in healthcare, where symptoms are sometimes dismissed or misattributed. Together, these factors underline the importance of targeted education, screening, and advocacy for women’s heart health.
There are actionable steps women can take to gain more control over their cardiovascular health, such as Knowing your numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, bmi, blood sugar) and regular check-ups. A heart-healthy diet and regular exercise, as well as managing stress effectively are paramount. In clinical settings, don’t downplay your symptoms—advocate for your health.
